The Vedas, a collection of ancient Sanskrit texts, hold a paramount position within Hinduism. The word "Veda" itself signifies "knowledge," implying that these sacred scriptures reveal the essence of dharma (righteous conduct) – a concept otherwise unobtainable through mere reason. Encompassing a vast and holistic body of wisdom, the Vedas were subsequently codified by the revered sage Bhagavan Vedavyasa. This classification, into the four Samhitas – Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda – aimed to facilitate the performance of Vedic rituals (yajnas and yagas) and enhance scholarly study.

Traditionally, the Vedas were transmitted orally from accomplished sages (gurus) to dedicated students (vidyarthis) residing in gurukulas. These gurukulas fostered an immersive learning environment, where students cultivated not only intellectual pursuits but also a devout and disciplined lifestyle under the close guidance of their gurus.
